Lewes, Delaware, founded in 1631, is a quaint historic town with restaurants, shops, museums and bed and breakfasts. As Lewes was the earliest settlement in the state, and Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution, the town refers to itself as “The First Town in the First State.” The town sits on the lower reach of the Delaware Bay, but the Atlantic Ocean is nearby at Cape Henlopen State Park. The beaches on the bay and ocean are rarely as crowded as they can be in at the larger resort beaches.
Second Street in Lewes is the main hub of this small town setting with casual and upscale dining options, antique shops and artists’ galleries. A few of the favorite dining options are the gastro-pub cuisine at The Rose & Crown, fresh seafood at Striper Bites and the southwest fusion plates at Agave. After dinner you’ll want to check in at local favorite King’s Ice Cream. Fisherman’s Wharf is a dock that stretches along the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal. It features multiple restaurants and bait shops, and in season the dock hosts hundreds of boats from all over the east coast.

Lewes has a strong sense of community and many family oriented events are scheduled throughout the entire year. The Lewes Historical Society is very active in the preservation of the community and is the host of the famous Historic Lewes Farmer’s Market. From spring to fall, visitors to the market can find fresh local produce, cheeses, fruits, baked goods, meats, flowers and cooking workshops by local restaurants.
Residents of Lewes also enjoy being close to healthcare as the largest hospital in the area, Beebe Healthcare, is located near the heart of town.
Lewes real estate can vary greatly depending on your lifestyle criteria. Affordable homes can be found in the many outlying communities in more rural areas just 5-10 minutes from downtown. The homes located on the Delaware Bay, along the canal or in the historic downtown areas typically command a higher price tag.
