Delaware’s largest resort area traces its origins back to 1873, when the grounds of the Rehoboth Beach Methodists Church Camp was established. Today, Rehoboth Beach calls itself “The Nation’s Summer Capital” because of the number Mid-Atlantic tourists that vacation here. The year-round population of less than 2,000 can swell to 100,000 in summer. It has also become popular as a retirement destination because of its small town character, low taxes, and fabulous beaches.
Rehoboth Beach provides a relaxing alternative to nearby and much larger Ocean City, Maryland. Reader’s Digest named the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk as “Best of America”. Additionally, AARP has named Rehoboth Beach as one of five dream towns as “Best Places to Retire”. Fishing, swimming, volleyball, beach-combing and strolling the mile-long boardwalk are just a few of the toursist activities on the beach. Rehoboth Beach is consistently rated a five-star beach for water quality and Delaware ranks 1st out of 30 states overall. There is also plenty of room on the beach for catching the rays, building sand castles and surfing the waves. Most importantly, access to the beach is free of charge.
